Editorial: Beware the Child-Man?

Kay Hymowitz recently stated on NPR that 20-30 year-old men should stop playing video games and become productive members of society. Is bachelorhood is a bad habit and a sign of society’s ills? Are video games really to blame?

Park West Regional Activity Center – Approved

I know that there are many Morrisville and Cary residents that are disappointed by the decision of the Board of Commissioners. Received the following update from NoParkWest.

Park West Regional Activity Center – Approved

To all who signed, wrote, attended and researched: Your time was valuable and you shared it in the effort to make a positive difference. Thank you.

By a vote of 5-2, the Morrisville Board of Commissioners approved the Park West rezoning, site plan, and amendment to our Land Use Plan.

Those voting in favor of Park West:

Motion to approve: Liz Johnson ljohnson@ci.morrisville.nc.us

Second: Mark Stohlman mstohlman@ci.morrisville.nc.us

Mayor Jan Faulkner jfaulkner@ci.morrisville.nc.us

Mike Snyder msnyder@ci.morrisville.nc.us

Tom Murry tmurry@ci.morrisville.nc.us

Those voting to deny Park West:

Linda Lyons lalyons@ci.morrisville.nc.us

Pete Martin pmartin@ci.morrisville.nc.us

Our elected board received hundreds of emails asking them to deny Park West. Our final petitions, submitted Monday morning, had signatures from 817 individuals, couples and families. We spoke out in numbers with broad based, factual concerns about the proposal. The elected board responded to our concerns and requests for denial with their vote to approve the project. Certainly not the outcome we hoped for or expected.

Sending one more email to the board, respectfully commenting on their vote, would be appropriate.

Thank you.

Wal-mart Is Still Selling Nazi T-Shirts 62 Weeks Later

Just when you thought all of the Wal-mart t-shirts bearing the exact replica of an infamous Nazi symbol were recalled, or sold to a discount store and burned, a Wal-mart in Palmdale, California has them on sale for $3.00 a pop.

While I haven’t followed this story at length, I find it interesting that the article insinuates that members of Congress have the authority to restrict what iconography a retailer can sell. I do find merchandise carrying the Nazi logos to be both offensive and in poor taste. I support the rights of individuals who to protest and applying pressure for Wal-mart to stop selling the questionable merchandise.

I take exception when representatives of the US government try to regulate what politically charged merchandise a retailer may sell.

It becomes a free speech issue.

Unpopular views are supposed to be protected by our First Amendment.
